and she never read another book
...this child's nails are suddenly like daggers; clipping baby claws is a hateful task, up there with bulb suctioning the nose. I tend to not do either on such a very regular basis.

We all had a pretty pleasant weekend. Friday D and I played pool on the East Si-yede. Baby stayed at grandma's that night - we returned from playing pool at 11 - we crashed shortly after. we ARE the parents, the tired parents.

What might have been any number of expensive problems with the car (starting, that is) turned out to be, after investigation on Sat., a battery. Now we just need to know whether the axle is cracked and we need a new hood to affix to its front and it should once again be worthy.

Sat. night we stayed in. How friggin' exciting. We rotated naps in the early evening - D actually went to bed for the night at about 8 - I stayed up because of the nap I'd taken before his. I tried to watch "the 9th Configuration" but the tape was warbly...wound up watching SNL for a couple of minutes...blah, blah, blah. First skit featured Phil Hartman and Chris Farley...who's next? That show has kind of a high mortality rate.

BABY POWER

In the past, what, two weeks, mr determination has mastered the following, more or less. He can roll from back to belly - although he hates being on his belly he cannot keep from compulsively rolling onto it.

He is busting a tooth or two - should be one, right? Looks like there are two lower incisors coming at once. Crrrrrannnkkkky! But different cranky - easily distracted cranky...hey that's not an accomplishment, but so what. He can sit, unpropped, in his highchair and play with his toys. He can sit unassisted on the floor for a minute until gravity overpowers his blossoming sense of balance. Thus, the boppy we bought him Sunday.

He turned 5 mths recently - he weighs almost 20 lbs! People keep saying what a big baby he is - but he's not chubby so much as strong, wiry.

He is pretty unhappy right now about his gums, I think, he's been affixed to my hip/lap for days...I had no idea what we all, as former infants, had to go through! Poor thing. Little bear. Husky voiced little baby - it is husky, it's funny. How to survive teething. I bought him his first teething ring yesterday and he kinda hates it - he likes hard plastic better although he must then protest about that, too.

I'm supposed to have been reading "A Day of the Locust" by Nathaniel West for about six months now. It's still sitting where Juan left it...dust and seed covered, hah ha. When will I ever be able to read a real book again? I am becoming less analytic by the second. If reading were a drug habit I would have it kicked! How sad. Before I had J I was reading mystery /crime / suspense novels by the barrel-full, waiting for labor to start, not wanting to read anything that would be ruined by attention too lightly paid, or readus interruptus. I think the last real book I read was "Naked" by David Sedaris....

o.k. - he's freaking out, later
